Hi! About me

I'm Jared, a game designer from Lima, Peru. Currently based in the Seattle metropolitan area, I came to study game design at DigiPen Institute of Technology, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Game Design, and minors in Psychology and English.

I started out in level design and UX/UI design, but after several game projects my focus narrowed to technical UI design. I've shipped multiple titles on Steam, worked in different game engines, and love learning whatever new tools a project calls for.

I'm currently looking for my next game design role!

Currently

I'm the Technical UI Designer at Brew Method, a small indie studio prototyping our first game, Black Hole Coffee, a 2D Metroidvania built in Godot. I am in charge of both the UI design and implementation.

I'm also active in the Seattle game dev community. I attend the Seattle Indies Socials every month, along with various other events they host. If you see me, don't hesitate to say hi. I'm always eager to meet other indie developers and people in the industry!

I'll be at PAX West and SLICE later this year, so if you're going too, reach out and let's meet up!

Hobbies

When I'm not making games, I'm usually playing them. I've been a Pokémon fan for as long as I can remember. Starting with Pokémon X when I was a kid, I fell in love with the aspects of creature collectors, namely the bond you can form with virtual creatures with awesome designs. Don't ask me to pick a favorite, but I really like Totodile,  Bulbasaur, Bidoof, Snorlax, the Slowpoke lines, and I've recently grown to love Heracross! I play Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sleep daily, and I'm currently playing a lot of Pokémon Legends: Z-A!

More recently, I've also been playing a lot of Dungeons & Dragons. I especially enjoy combat and the wacky dynamics our DM lets our party get away with. I'm still working on my roleplaying and improv skills, but it is always fun to learn from more experienced players. Here's the current character I'm playing for our campaign! Its name is Alorne I. Bark, and it's an intelligent weapon wizard. It (the quarterstaff) wears a snake skin wrapped around it because it's related to a Stheno, and it uses an orb that looks like an eye as its arcane focus. Its main quirk, apart from being a floating stick, is using Find Familiar to summon a snake familiar to help on our campaign.

I drew the art myself too, which is another thing I love to do. I enjoy making art, particularly about my hobbies. I don't upload my art online, but I've made art for some of my game projects in the past! Always happy to talk about the things I love, feel free to reach out!

Experience

I've worked on all kinds of projects, from student game projects and game jams to indie development, on teams ranging from just a few people to dozens. Bouncing between all of those has made me pretty adaptable. I'm comfortable jumping into whatever project needs and working closely with the artists, designers, and programmers around me.

The part I enjoy most is technical UI design, building interfaces from the UX decisions all the way down to the code behind them. Level design in a big part of what I do too, and I'm always happy to pick up a new engine or tool when a project calls for it.
